Break the chain ! Support Maltese campaign to release Palestinian prisoners
Garden of Knowledge Malta Association and The maltese communist Party announced the launch of the national campaign in solidarity with the Palestinian detainees held in the Israeli occupation jails ( Among them, Children , young women and Mps held without charge or trial).
The campaign, entitled “Palestinian detainees. . . . Isn’t it high time the chains were broken?” will be officially launched Saturday 30 th of May 2015 in Valletta, Court of Justice.
Thousands of Palestinian prisoners and detainees, including children, are held in Israeli prisons, many of them subjected to torture. Human rights organizations in Palestine/Israel released this joint statement outlining Israel’s ever-worsening abuses. An excerpt:
“As of March 2015, 5,820 Palestinian political prisoners, including Mp’s , women and children, are being held in prisons located inside Israel, in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel’s policies of detention and imprisonment are used in large part as political tools to suppress and maintain control over Palestinian society.
These policies are intended to obstruct the daily lives and social fabric of Palestinians, and undermine their ability to oppose the Israeli occupation by criminalizing basic political affiliation and/or activities and employing methods such as torture and ill-treatment to target and intimidate individuals and communities.”
In violation of international law Israel has turned prisons in to money making enterprises with the boys essentially forced to pay for their own imprisonment.
All but one is in HaSharon prison in Israel. The British private security contractor G4S provides the full security system at HaSharon including the central command room for the entire prison.
The longest serving Palestinian women prisoner is Lena Al-Jarboni who has endured 11 years in HaSharon and one of the latest of political prisoners is Palestinian parliamentarian, a prisoner advocate, leftist political leader Khalida Jarrar, whose case has garnered widespread international support since her arrest on April 2.
MP Jarrar suffers a difficult health status, and must have laboratory tests every three days to determine appropriate treatment to maintain her health and life. There are now 16 detainees who are members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, 8 of whom are held under administrative detention orders, 6 who are serving sentences, and 2 detained, including Jarrar.
The campaign will centre around her as an example of what Palestinian women or Mp’s have to endure and their resilience and steadfastness in the face of the colonial settlers and prisons.
We underline the need to develop a sense of duty, sincere commitment in order to raise awareness of the plight as regards the Palestinian struggle against colonialism.
We are demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all the children and hold G4S (British private security company that runs Israeli prisons) complicit in Israel’s crimes, particularly in the torture of Palestinian children.
Palestinian prisoners have increasingly protested the abusive conditions they face in Israeli jails. Add your voice to theirs!
